The High Representative/EU Special Representative Miroslav Lajčák today commented on the calls to erect a cross on Trebevic. “Religious symbols when used properly can play a role in promoting reconciliation. But too often location, dimensions or design are misused to deliberately provoke and create conflict. The proposal to erect a cross on Trebevic irresponsible abuse of the victims and political provocation designed to create interethnic tension. This is unacceptable. Municipal authorities are responsible for the relevant planning permissions. I expect them to act in a way that upholds a positive approach to reconciliation and not to raise tensions. A stable political atmosphere is a one of the precondition for OHR’s transitions to the EUSR, and until then I retain all my powers,” he said.
