Statistics

The statistical system in Bosnia and Herzegovina reflects the complex institutional structure of the state. It consists of three statistical institutions in BIH, one at State level (BHAS) and two at Entity level: Federal Institute of Statistics (FIS) and Republika Srpska Institute of Statistics (RSIS).  The EU interest in reliable and comprehensive statistics on the level of the State relates particularly to the EU accession process, which will require an assessment of BiH’s progress, first the SAA (Stabilisation and Association Agreement) requirements and then the Copenhagen economic criteria and will subsequently require and rely upon a set of reliable State-level indicators. The SAA requires that BiH develops a statistical system, capable of providing timely, reliable, objective and accurate data needed to plan and monitor transition and reform. Currently, preparations in the field of statistics are moderately advanced. Sector statistics such as national accounts, business and agricultural statistics remain to be improved.

The Census Law was adopted in February 2012 and subsequently amended in January 2013 stipulating that the census takes place in October 2013. The International Monitoring Operation (IMO) concluded that the 2013 Population and Housing Census in Bosnia and Herzegovina was as a whole conducted in compliance with international standards.

The EU is supporting capacity building of the statistical system of BiH by providing continuous support in various statistical domains such as: macroeconomics, business, financial, agricultural and social statistics. Also, significant support in equipment, technical assistance and international monitoring operation is foreseen for the population and households census.
