Opening Ceremony of the Medical Waste Treatment Centre in Doboj

On 31 July 2007, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed for the implementation of a project which addresses the collecting and treating of infectious medical waste in the Doboj-Tesanj region. 

Dr. Ranko Skrbic, Minister of Health and Social Protection of RS, Mr. Kjartan Bjornsson, Head of Section for Economic Development and Natural Resources of the Delegation of the European Commission to BiH and the Dr. Dusko Vasic, Director of the Hospital “Sveti Apostol Luka” in Doboj opened the Centre for Collection and Treatment of Infectious Medical Waste.  The Centre is located within the Hospital grounds.

The European Union has provided 460,000 Euro for this project, which is implemented in the framework of pilot projects in solid waste management in the regions of Doboj-Tesanj and Sarajevo Canton. 

The aim of this particular project is to establish a harmonised system for separation and treatment of medical waste in medical facilities in the Doboj-Tesanj region.  The project encompasses three hospitals (Doboj, Tesanj and Odzak) and 110 healthcare centres in the region. The medical  waste will be managed in accordance with European standards, with the aim of preventing infectious waste going to landfills  together with ordinary solid waste. 

Mr. Bjornsson and Dr. Vasic signed the Memorandum of Understanding to this effect.
