PC users free to choose web browsers

The Commission has announced today it resolved its competition case with Microsoft, accepting Microsoft’s commitments to give users browser choice.

From March 2010, more than 100 millions European private users of Windows will be able to choose which web browser(s) they want to use on their computer. For new buyers of Windows 7, the choice screen update will be available for 5 years. Users calling up a web browser will be offered a ’browser choice screen’ to choose one (or more) of the 12 most popular browsers. With greater competition between web browsers, users are expected to opt for a variety of different browsers. This should lead to more innovation in related products such as digital content, software, web technology etc…
