The opening night of the European Film Days 2018, organised by the EUNIC, EU in BiH/ EU Info centre and embassies of 11 EU Member States, took place on 30 May at the Meeting point cinema in Sarajevo. This year’s film event features 11 European great film titles that have won highly-acclaimed awards in several national and international festivals, clustered around Europe Day (9 May).
Welcoming the audience at the opening, Deputy Head of EU Delegation to BiH, Khaldoun Sinno, reminded of the importance of Europe Day which was marked this year with the focus on European cultural heritage recalling our common history, culture, and our belonging to the same European family.
“European Film Days symbolically represent “a place” where the cultures meet. The festival is also about cultural heritage featured by cinematography. I am happy to be here tonight in a country so rich with movies”, said Sinno.
The festival was opened with the screening of the German film “Labyrinth of lies” directed by Giulio Ricciarelli. Expressing her satisfaction to open this year’s film festival with German film, H.E Christiane Hofmann, German Ambassador in BiH, said the film “Labyrinth of lies” is based on historic facts about handling people’s own difficult past. “Important lesson we learnt is that everyone needs to tackle his own history in order to build future society and democracy,” said H.E. Hofmann.
Emmanuel Mouriez, Director of the EU National Institute for Culture (EUNIC BiH) briefly introduced the EUNIC’s activities and expressed his gratitude to all EU member states, EU Delegation to BiH and EU Info Centre for organising this successful launch.
Cinema lovers of all ages have the opportunity to enjoy the screenings of the best European films, running from 30 May to 9 June at the Meeting Point Cinema, in the evening hours. Czech movie “The teacher” will be screened on 31 May followed by Greek movie “A touch of spice” (1 June), Slovakian “Little Harbour” (2 June), Romanian movie “6.9 on the Richter scale” (3 June), Polish movie “The Zookeeper-s wife”(4 June), Austrian movie “Fly away home” (5 June), Hungarian movie “Bet on revenge” (6 June), Spanish movie “10 000 km” (7 June), Italian “Trieste, Yugoslavia” (8 June). European Film Days end with the screening of the French movie “Corporate” on 9 June.
