Statement on the judiciary in Bosnia and Herzegovina

In response to recent comments on the judiciary in Bosnia and Herzegovina, EUD/EUSR spokesperson Andy McGuffie said:

“The European Union strongly defends the principle of independence of the judiciary against political pressures or any undue interference. The accountability of Judges and Prosecutors throughout BiH should therefore remain within the legal framework in force. The EU also notes the need to promptly undertake all necessary measures to implement the relevant judgements of the European Court of Human Rights. This issue, along with other relevant matters pertaining to the functioning of the judiciary will continue to be discussed in the context of the EU-BiH Structured Dialogue on Justice.”
