EUSR supports Lets Do It! tree-planting initiative

Head of EU Delegation and EU Special Representative in BiH, Ambassador Peter Sorensen, expressed his support for this year’s forestation initiative organized by the movement Let’s Do It! in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Thousands of volunteers will plant thousands of seedlings all across the country on Saturday, 25 October. Bosnia and Herzegovina is the first country in the world which organizes a voluntary action of forestation within the global ecological movement Let’s Do It! World. For the past two years, EUSR has been a supporter of another initiative organized by Let’s Do It!, which aims at removing illegal garbage dump sites in BiH.

“We are very proud that the Let’s Do It! project is growing and developing and is now recognizable throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina. We are also happy that EUSR is supporting our activities, which gives the whole projects a special and additional value. The goal of our initiative is to put emphasis on multibeneficial role of forests as a crucial component of our eco system. Unfortunately, the floods in May were a brutal showcase of what happens when we neglect our environment”, said the Coordinator of the Initiative, Junuz Alkaz.

“Reconstruction works – which are part of the 42 million-worth EU Floods Recovery Programme – are well underway. We are rebuilding homes, schools, and medical facilities. But our goal is not only to cope with the consequences of the May floods; we are trying to prevent future ones and to minimize any effects as much as possible. Trees are refiners of green-house gases and a natural barrier to landslides. This is why we are supporting this very good initiative coming from people in Bosnia and Herzegovina. I wish all the best to Let’s Do It! Team, all the volunteers who will join them and I have no doubt that their efforts will make this part of Europe even more beautiful,” said Ambassador Peter Sorensen.
