2014 Progress Report: Bosnia and Herzegovina has not overcome standstill in the European integration process

Deputy Head of Unit for Bosnia and Herzegovina in the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Enlargement, Georg Ziegler, presented the findings of the 2014 Progress Report for Bosnia and Herzegovina to members of BiH civil society today.

In a meeting held in Sarajevo, Mr Ziegler stressed that Bosnia and Herzegovina has made very limited progress in addressing the political criteria and has not overcome the standstill in the European integration process while most other countries in the region are moving ahead decisively.

“This regrettable situation is caused mostly by a lack of collective political will on the side of the leadership. The efficiency and functioning of the political institutions at all levels of government need to be improved and a well-functioning coordination mechanism on EU matters be set up urgently”, Ziegler stated.

NGOs attending the presentation work in a wide variety of areas including policy analysis, women’ rights and minorities.

The European Union regularly consults with NGO representatives and their valuable input is sought when preparing annual progress reports for countries which aspire to join the Union.
