Sorensen underlines strong EU support for central election commission

The adoption of amendments to the Election Law were at the top of the agenda during the visit of Ambassador Peter Sorensen, Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Bosnia and Herzegovina and EU Special Representative, to the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Bosnia and Herzegovina today.

Speaking after meeting with the President of the CEC, Ambassador Sorensen said:

“It is vital that the Constitutional Court decision about the alignment of the Election Law and the Law on Territorial Organisation of the Republika Srpska is implemented. We urge the BiH Parliament, without delay, to adopt the relevant amendments.

“This is the absolutely essential condition for the CEC to be able to call elections on time, and the CEC has the full support of the EU. Under no circumstances should the holding of general elections be jeopardised.

“The urgently needed implementation of the BiH Constitutional Court ruling, that would ensure elections are called by the CEC, comes on top of a growing number of other pressing changes to the Election Law required from BiH institutions and leaders, in particular the implementation of the European Court of Human Rights judgement in ‘Sejdic and Finci vs Bosnia and Herzegovina’.”
