European Commission Deputy Director General for Enlargement, Joost Korte, visited the Memorial and Cemetery in Potocari/Srebrenica on 9 December 2013. Mr. Korte met and discussed with representatives of the three associations of the families of the genocide victims and the Memorial Centre Director, Mersed Smajlovic. Deputy Director General Korte laid a wreath at the memorial stone and paid respects to the buried victims.
He reminded that eighteen years have passed since the genocide was committed in Srebrenica in July 1995, stressing that the pain and grief of those who lost their children, parents, relatives and friends remain ever present.
The Mothers of Srebrenica accompanied Mr. Korte on a tour of the burial area. He later visited the former Battery Factory and signed the Visitor’s Book at the Memorial Room that contains personal stories and belongings of some of the victims.
