Croatia is not leaving the region – EU is coming closer to Bosnia and Herzegovina

The Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Bosnia and Herzegovina/EU Special Representative, Ambassador Peter Sorensen, today joined the President of the Republic of Croatia, H.E. Mr Ivo Josipovic, at a symbolic event in Brcko to mark the accession of Croatia to the European Union. The event took place in the context of President Josipovic’s two day visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

President Josipovic underlined the positive role that Croatia wishes to play in assisting the other countries of the region to move closer to EU membership. He noted that it was for this reason he had chosen to make his first foreign visit following Croatia’s EU accession, in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Ambassador Sorensen said:

“This is a historic visit. The EU has moved right to the borders of Bosnia and Herzegovina as of 1 July. There is no doubt that the experiences Croatia has gained during EU accession will be useful for Bosnia and Herzegovina in its own path. Geographically and trade-wise we are your main partner. The EU is where Bosnia and Herzegovina belongs and I am sure that the vast majority of citizens of the country agree. The European Union is open for those who want to join and for those who meet the standards.”

The President, along with Ambassador Sorensen and the Mayor of Brcko, cut a cake featuring the EU, Croatian and BiH flags. The ceremony took place in the middle of the bridge over the river Sava that joins BiH and Croatia.
