Coordinated Fight against Corruption – Experience Sharing and Best Practices

The coordinated fight against corruption was the topic of a seminar with high-level representatives of the prosecution and law-enforcement agencies on the 17th and 18th of June 2010 in Sarajevo. The seminar brought together participants from Bosnia and Herzegovina and experts from EU member states with the aim to exchange experience and best practices. Examples from EU member states – Slovenia, Latvia and Bulgaria – in the fight against corruption were presented.

The participants looked at different models of cooperation between prosecutors and police services. Particular attention was paid to issues such as the use of special investigation means in corruption investigations and the need to ensure adequate resources to the police and prosecution services.

The examples which were presented illustrated, that good governance is a prerequisite for effective institutions, a standard that all EU member states are striving to achieve. It was reiterated that without effective sanctions, without a clear demonstration from all levels of government, that corruption will not be tolerated and that corrupt officials are not safe any more, all prevention efforts will be in vain.

The EU and EUPM representatives confirmed that they are ready to continue providing support to sustain the anti-corruption activities in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The seminar was organised by the European Union Delegation to Bosnia and Herzegovina together with the European Union Police Mission.
