On the 29th of April 2015, the Foundation Cultural Heritage without Borders (CHwB) organized an event in a Sarajevo tram in order to increase awareness of the importance of cultural heritage as a common wealth of all citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The event was organized in a tram covered with illustrations of tangible and intangible cultural heritage from across Bosnia and Herzegovina, and messages promoting universal and valuable heritage that belong to all citizens of this country. Passengers of this tram received small gifts which promote cultural heritage, tasted traditional Bosnian and Herzegovinian sweets, and had an opportunity to learn more from CHwB staff members about the country’s rich cultural heritage and about the importance of its preservation and protection.
This activity is part of the “Make It Yours!” project which is funded by the European Union under the ‘Sarajevo 2014’ programme in the amount of 238.736 EUR. This programme incorporates a series of projects implemented in and around the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, in order for Sarajevo to send messages of peace, reconciliation and solidarity to the world.
“We symbolically decided to organize this event in the tram as it is one of the first public transportation systems in this part of Europe. Our aim was to promote the extraordinary cultural heritage that Bosnia and Herzegovina and its citizens possess. We believe that preservation of our common heritage is a duty of all citizens of this country and this event is one small step in the process of protection and promotion of valuable heritage that belong to all of us equally,” said Arijana Mandić, “Make It Yours!” project coordinator.
The project “Make it Yours!” aims to raise awareness among citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina of the importance of cultural heritage as a common wealth, as well as to provide a space for open dialogues on heritage, culture and identity.
This project is implemented by CHwB in collaboration with the Bosniak Institute – Foundation Adil Zulfikarpašić and the US Alumni Association to BiH. CHwB is a Swedish non-governmental established in April 1995. CHwB is dedicated to protection, preservation and promotion of cultural heritage worldwide. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, CHwB has restored 25 sites and implemented more than 40 projects in the last 20 years.
