Cleaner water and environment for citizens of Zivnice Municipality and Tuzla Canton

The new Waste Water Treatment Plant in Zivinice Municipality was officially opened at today’s Ceremony, by Melvin Asin Head of Cooperation at the EU Delegation to BiH,  Nermin Niksic Prime Minister of the BiH Federation and Hasan Muratovic Mayor of Zivinice.

The total value of this important project for the improvement of the water/waste water infrastructure in the Zivinice Municipality and Tuzla Canton was EUR 7.2 million. The main objectives of the project are to improve environmental protection and contribute to local economic development.

It was jointly financed from the EU IPA grant funds, SIDA funds, World Bank loan and local contribution. The EU provided grants in the amount of EUR 3 million under the IPA 2007 and IPA 2010 for this project.

As result, four sewage collectors in total length of 10 km were constructed under EU IPA 2007 in the amount of EUR 1.5 million and the Waste Water Treatment Plant for mechanical and biological treatment, co-financed by the EU from IPA 2010 in the amount of EUR 1.5 million.

Melvin Asin, Head of Cooperation at the EU Delegation to BiH said: “It is always a pleasure to participate in an event where we are celebrating the successful completion of a project, as we do today, a project that will improve health and living conditions for the citizens of Tuzla Canton. As an aspirant Member State of the EU, Bosnia and Herzegovina has to continue with the improvement of the water and sanitation infrastructure, for the health of the country and its citizens of course and also to advance on its European integration path. Further progress in this important area will help to improve the quality of life of the country’s citizens and meet Bosnia and Herzegovina’s needs regarding future compliance with the EU environmental legislation.”

Construction of this Waste Water Treatment Plant Zivinice and the discontinuation of the use of septic tanks will result in substantial reductions in the level of pollution discharged to the environment. Furthermore, it will prevent further pollution of underground water used as a source of drinking water for people in Tuzla Canton.

The ceremony was also attended by Director of SIDA, Marie Bergstrom; Director of the Fond for the protection of the environment of the FBiH, Safet Harbinja, Director of STRABEG AG, Moritz Freyborn and Prime Minister of Tuzla Canton, Bahrija Umihanic.
