Ambassador Sorensen meets UNICEF’s new Representative in BiH

Head of the EU Delegation and the EU Special Representative in BiH, Ambassador Peter Sorensen, met today in the EU House in Sarajevo with the new UNICEF Representative in BiH, Dr. Ayman A. Abulaban and the new Deputy Representative, Ms. Anna Riatti.

Ambassador Sorensen and his guests discussed the EU-funded Floods Recovery Programme in BiH; UNICEF is subcontracted by the UNDP as an implementing partner in the Programme.

Ambassador Sorensen said:

“We would like to thank UNICEF for their cooperation and implementation support in the 42 million euro EU Floods Recovery Programme. The Programme is currently a key priority for the EU in Bosnia and Herzegovina due to its direct impact on lives of the people affected by floods. The Programme has benefitted from UNICEF’s global expertise and knowledge pertaining to rehabilitation of schools and kindergartens, as well as from setting up and running temporary schooling facilities for children while works on school buildings are underway.”

UNICEF’s role in the programme is to provide basic furniture and teaching materials (such as blackboards) to schools and kindergartens which are rehabilitated under the programme; and create and manage ‘child-friendly places’ in temporary school facilities (such as tents outside of schools) where children can plan and learn while the rehabilitation works in school building are ongoing.
