European Parliament election, 2014.

From 22 to 25 May 2014, elections to the European Parliament (EP) were held in the European Union. It was the 8th parliamentary election since the first direct elections in 1979, and 375 million people from 28 countries were eligible to vote. The European People’s Party (EPP), which brings together moderate right-wing parties, won a total of 221 of the 751 seats in the European Parliament, which has maintained the advantage it had in the previous session. The Party of European Socialists and Democrats (PES) remains the second largest, with 190 seats, which is two less than before the election. The biggest loss was recorded by the liberals (ALDE), whose share decreased from 84 seats to 59, while the Greens got 49 seats, twelve less than before.

National Front, the extreme right-wing led by Marine Le Pen, and antieuropean UKIP, led by Nigel Farage, recorded good results in France and the UK, but not enough to threaten the leadership of major parties.

The extreme right Freedom Party led by Geert Wilders in the Netherlands seriously under performed, as well as German neo-Nazis, who had barely entered the EP, while the German Eurosceptic alternative for Germany (AFD) won about 6.5 percent of the vote.
