EU supported BiH in developing its Market Surveillance System to ensure safety of non-food consumer products

The official closing conference of the EU funded twinning project “Support to the Market Surveillance Agency of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Market Surveillance System” took place today at the Delegation of the European Union to Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo.

The project provided support to a number of organisations and agencies in Bosnia and Herzegovina in ensuring the safety of consumer products on the market in BiH and thereby protect the health and safety of citizens and create an environment for BiH businesses to improve their trade with the EU and other international markets.

Experts from the EU Member States, UK and Latvia, provided information, advice and training on product safety to a variety of organisations including government agencies, economic operators and consumer groups to assist in the development of the market surveillance system in BiH in accordance with EU law and best practice.

The project started on the 3 October 2012. Its purpose was to provide support to improve the market surveillance system to further protect consumers from unsafe goods. Specifically, help was provided to the Market Surveillance Agency as well as the Inspectorates of the BiH Federation, Republika Srpska and Brcko District BiH.

The project was financed by the European Union from the Instrument of Pre-Accession Assistance (IPA 2009) in the amount of 600,000 EURO and was implemented by a consortium led by Northern Ireland Cooperation Overseas (NICO) consisting of experts from the EU Member States of UK and Latvia (Consumer Rights Protection Centre).
