Social and economic development at centre of ambassadors’ visit to Stolac

EU Ambassadors spent the day in the Herzegovina town of Stolac on Friday 5 July on a visit hosted by the Mayor, Stjepan Bošković.

Head of the Delegation of the EU to Bosnia and Herzegovina/EUSR Ambassador Peter Sorensen was joined by the Ambassadors of the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Romania, the Head of the Diplomatic Bureau of Belgium and the Charge d’affaires of the Embassy of Sweden.

After a meeting with the Mayor and the Speaker of the Municipal Assembly, the Ambassadors visited the Old Town of Stolac which is being reconstructed with 944,000 euro of EU funds. The municipality of Stolac is looking to develop its offer to tourists and the reconstruction will assist that effort.

Speaking at the press conference, Ambassador Sorensen said:

“Visiting local communities also helps us to understand the issues at higher levels of governance. Creating an economy that can withstand the pressures of EU membership starts locally so this is also why we try to get around the country as much as possible. It is also important that we address social issues, today we will meet the school principals to hear their experiences and reiterate that the EU is opposed to segregation in education.”

The Ambassadors also visited the economic-business zone at Hodovo where investment is being made in renewable energy. The municipality of Stolac representatives outlined their efforts to make business registration as speedy as possible.
